About rSoGuitar

Traditional music theory focuses on studying the patterns and relationships that notes and chords make on the 5-ledger line staff. Many guitarists don't have an affinity for "reading" music. rSoGuitar is about learning to study the patterns and positional relationships found where your eyes spend most of their time looking: The fretboard.

Pattern Based Understanding

Learn to read the milestones in the pattern such that you can quickly discern where the entire pattern is situated on the fretboard.

Fretboard Geography

Develop your sense of relative positioning for the pattern such that you know where all the available chords are for the key you're in.

Relativistic Navigation

Learn your way around the fretboard naturally, such as the way you would your home town, in real life, using relativitic reasoning...two blocks from the bank, rather than giving the absolute longitude and latitude which is what G# - A# are analogous to.

Key Independent

Capitalize on the power of key independent projection of the pattern on the fretboard. Changing keys or playing in other modes should be a snap, not a calculus problem.

Concepts

Learn how to "see" the pattern of correct notes, enabling you to create melodies and chords without ever getting lost or not knowing the position of the available notes and chords.

Spiral Mapping

Learn how to navigate the naturally occuring pattern vertically across the fretboard in a manner that spirals from one end of the neck to the other, leaving no note unmapped.

Jumping

Learn the simple rules that will allow you to move freely in the horizontal direction without ever hitting a bad note or getting lost.

Family of Chords

Discover the relationship between the positions of chords across the fretboard in the horizontal direction.

Familial Heirarchy

Learn the relative positions of all the naturally occuring chords in the vertical direction.

Ready for BREAKTHROUGH?

There are many ways to learn guitar. Most who try to learn find it hard to gain a foothold that they won't later lose. If this method works for you, and you're anything like me...you'll actually be a little angry at the whole world when you finally see how simple it really is. "Why didn't someone show it to me this way before?"

01

Tradition Methods

If you have tried the tradition music theory learning route and found it frustrating, then this could be the method that finally breaks you through to the other side. One of my closest friends actually had tears in his eyes the day I finally got him deep enough into these waters that the light clicked on. He had been yearning to be able to really play the guitar all his life.

02

Music Theory

Learning this method has allowed me to learn how to transfer powerful music theory concepts from the guitar to other instruments. Because of this method, I have branched out to being able to play piano, cello, xylophone, saxophone, and just about anything else I can get my hands on and to great effect. Not only am I able to quickly find my bearings on where the pattern and chords are...but I am able to also incorporate exotic scales such as harmonic minor, diminished scale, blues, etc. This method not only allows you to sidestep the need for learning to read music but it can actually assist you in conquering that realm.

03

All Skill Levels

Whether you are a beginner or well beyond...even at a mastery level...learning to look at the fretboard in this new and different way will simply strengthen your arsenal. I have been playing for over 30 years and I still discover new things from this style of study.

Frequently Asked Questions

This method has been around since 2001 and many learning and advanced guitarists have benefitted from the insights it offers. If you have questions perhaps you can find them in the list below:

  • Do the concepts in the book also apply to other instruments?

Yes, the concepts in this book can be used to master other instruments as well. I have used it to of course learn guitar, bass, ukulele, but ALSO banjo, piano, saxophone, cello, xylophone, and anything else I can get my hands on. The rSoGuitar method gives you a way to find the pattern and quickly, get your bearings and start executing phrases and chords that are in agreement with the key you are in.

  • No, the book is only about 30 pages long. I worked very hard to boil the entire approach down to as few pages as I could while still communicating the concepts completely. In my experience the books I've read have been way too long and cause the reader to lose interest before any real traction can be gained. This book gets right to the point. The whole approach is designed to reduce the need for lengthy explanation.

  • Yes, this is the same method that was going strong many years ago. In the recent past the platform of Adobe Flash Player has been largely shut down, so I am having to rebuild it another way in the mean time.

  • The concepts will reveal themselves very quickly to the mind. What takes longer is training the hands to build the habits that have found a home in your thinking. In person, I have seen some students assimilate the major concepts within a half hour lesson. So, depending on your reading comprehension skills, you could find your way to the promise land with this book in very little time at all. However long it takes you to read about 30 pages. But what is more likely is that within your first few pages you will discover stuff that is so cool and liberating that you might get lost playing your guitar and temporarily forget you were reading a book.
